I was reading a local paper recently when I came across a social media myth. Whats worst, this myth was used as the basis of analysis in the article.
Political analyst and College Professor Dr. Ian Strachan in analysing the support of political newcomer Branville McCartney was quoted as saying;
I know the youth vote is very important, but the swing vote is more important because it consists of a wide range of persons. The youth vote is more first time voters and my instinct is that at the end of the day, most young people will vote what their parents vote.
In the end, when all the campaigning is going on, most young people will feel the pressure of their parents working along with these parties and they will vote based on how their parents vote.
Do you recognize the social media myth that his analysis is based on?
Dr. Strachan believes the classic myth that only young people are on social media sites. I could not let the analysis go unchallenged so I posted the following;
One of the greatest myths about social media is that it is mostly young people. There are over 150,000 Bahamians on Face Book 18-24 yrs old make up 28.7% or roughly 44,000. However 25 – 44 yr olds make up 41% or roughly 63,000. Dr. Strachan should know better than to underestimate the power of face book after witnessing world events over the past year.
Regardless of your political leanings you have to realize that social media is a force to be reckoned with. Ignore it at your own peril.
In light of what I believe is still a widely held belief in The Bahamas I decided to create the following charts that show the true demographic make up of Bahamians on Face Book.
According to the CIA world fact book the current population of The Bahamas is 313,000. So this chart tells us that roughly 50% of the country’s population is on Facebook. Lets compare that to other nations based on percentage of population;
This is a small sample of countries, but its obvious that The Bahamas is comparable to the largest countries in the world in terms of percentage of population on Facebook.
Age Distribution of Bahamians on Face Book
We know that the majority of Bahamians on Face Book are female, but lets look at the age distribution in more detail;
One of the great things about Face book is it gives you access to great demographic statistics, not only do we know how many Bahamians are on the social network, we can break it down by Age, Sex, and Relationship. You can even target persons on their birthday.
- Majority of Bahamians on Face Book are Females, but not by much.
- 53% of Bahamians on Face Book are over the age of 25 years old
I’m sure as small business owners you can appreciate the value of having this information at your fingertips. Let me give you a hint: In my article getting started in social media, one of the steps I mentioned was identifying your target audience.
If you know who your target market is, Face Book gives you the tools to reach out and touch them directly. Instead of hoping your marketing efforts are reaching the right people, you will know that they are.
