Many businesses found it to be a rough year; some of you just managed to hold on.
Many of you probably did ok but found it more difficult than in previous years, and a few of you even managed to thrive (thumbs up!).
Regardless of how you did in 2012, its time to retool and ensure 2013 is your best year yet. To help you achieve that goal, here are 3 trends I think you should seriously consider;
Trend # 1 – Massive Move To Facebook For Local Business
In 2011 I launched Get Social Bahamas because I realized that the tools I was using daily could be powerful for local businesses. At the time very few local businesses were on Facebook.
In 2012 that started to change in a big way as I noticed more and more small businesses showing up on Facebook with Business Fan pages.
I believe this trend will continue in a Big way this year. More businesses will jump on the band wagon and a Facebook page will become the norm. By the end of 2013 customers will expect the businesses they support to be on Facebook just like they now expect them to be in the yellow pages.
Could Your Business Benefit from a Facebook page? Here are a few things you should consider before putting your business on Facebook.
Trend #2 – Mobile and Email Marketing Increase
BTC is doing a great job of ensuring that every Bahamian has a smart phone with data access to the internet. Bahamians now have Iphones, Androids, Ipads, Nooks, Playbooks etc. We are no longer tied to a desktop/laptop computer.
The Next time you are out and about observe the people around you; notice how many have mobile phones and how often they check them. What are they doing?
Most often when I’m on my phone, I’m checking email or visiting a social media site. Can we assume others are doing the same?
Recent research has shown that a 78% of people use their smart phones for email and 1/3 of Facebook users access the site through mobile.
I think the trend toward mobile internet usage will continue to grow in The Bahamas and Business executives need to consider how they can better reach those persons on mobile devices.
Trend #3. Optimization Becomes Important
At the beginning of this article I mentioned how 2012 was a rough year. Well things are still pretty rough and it has become increasingly important for businesses to watch their spending habits.
Optimization: To make optimal, get the most out of, use best
While some business execs will be cutting cost indiscriminately, smart execs will be optimizing for value. What does that look like?
Well you can optimize almost anything to get better results; Lets say you have a Facebook page for your business there are small tweaks you can make that can have a huge impact.
You can also optimize where you spend your marketing budget; Is spending a ton of money targeting random people who buy a newspaper worth it compared to spending the same amount on social media?
3 ways to take advantage of these trends
- Get your business on Facebook asap
- Start collecting customer information (name & email minimum)
- Take a hard look at where you are spending your marketing dollars

Good luck in 2013 and remember the future of business is social!
