In today’s economy businesses are
fighting tooth and nail , I mean competing for customers.
Customers are the lifeblood of your business, without them, you fail. Simple.
To attract more customers you need to step your game up. You need a way to distinguish yourself, to gain an edge in the market.
Implementing an online strategy is a great way to gain a competitive advantage on your competitors.
But what does that mean and how do you do it?
I’ll get to that in a moment, but what it doesn’t mean, is throwing up some basic website, creating profiles on bahamas yellow pages, bahamas local, or joining every social media platform out there and begging people to like you!
Really doing online right means thinking deeply about how you can use the tools available and implementing a solid strategy
With so few local business using online marketing effectively, it is one of the easiest ways to set yourself a part and stand out in your customer’s mind.
As a business owner it is important to know who your competition is, because these are the people who your customers will be comparing you to.
Step 1 – Know Your Competitors.
Who do people choose when they don’t choose your company? They will be comparing you mainly on the following categories;
- Price – How much do they charge for the same type of products or services you offer.
- Product Quality – Is the quality of their products services lower, higher or comparable to your own
- Customer Service – How is their customer service, what do customers say about them.
Make a list of the top 3 competitors in your industry or who you consider your top 3 competitors.
Step 2 – Find Them Online
After you’ve figured out who your competitors are its time to do some digging. For this we will use Facebook and Google. Not only will you find your list of competitors, you may also find businesses you were not aware of. Here’s what to do.
- Go to google and type in your industry name + Bahamas or vice versa
- Ignore paid advertisements to the top and take note of who shows up on the first page of results.
- Next type in the names you wrote down. ( Take note of their website, Facebook page, and any other listings)
Here’s some basic questions you want to answer.
- Do They Have A Business Website?
- Are they On Facebook?
- Are they on Twitter?
- What About Other Local Listings?
Take note of it all.
Step 3 – How Do You Stack Up Against the Competition Online
Based on all the information you’ve gathered from step’s 1 & 2 you should have a good feel for your competitors and where you stand in relation to them online.
Now is the time to compare what you’re doing to what they’re doing. Look at it from the stand point of how it will influence a potential customer.
They have a website and you don’t, persons searching online can find them and not you
They are on Facebook, not you – can they exercise more influence with potential customers than you?
Same for twitter and other local listings. If they’re in locations where you’re not, you could be at a disadvantage.
The good news is that not many local businesses are using online marketing (that’s about to change) and those that are, are not doing it very effectively.
So even if they have a head start, you can easily catch and surpass them with the right strategy.
If neither of you are online, you need to get there first and establish a foothold.
If you’re there and they are not, it’s time to dominate. Your business will be booming before they realize what you’re doing and then it will be too late!
Step 4 – Develop A Strategy That will let you stand out
A few years ago very few companies were on FB, and just showing up meant you were better than most. In 2012 I predicted that was going to change.
Now with more and more local companies joining the network, you have to implement an effective strategy for your page to be effective.
I’m making another prediction; As the cost of doing business continues to increase in The Bahamas, local businesses are going to move online in a big way. They will be looking to connect with more customers and reduce advertising costs.
The businesses with the best strategy will win.
I don’t know your specific situation so I can’t give you a strategy that will work for you.
Here’s What I recommend;
I recommend you not only think of going online to simply “get customers”, but start thinking of how to build relationships with them.
Think about how you can connect with your customers online in such a way that you become their go to choice in your industry for your service or product.
Think about how you can make them want to brag about you.
That is how you dominate.
Regardless of what strategy you implement you need to start with the right tools.
